Metal Siding: Profiles and Performance

Metal siding has moved well past the agricultural look most people picture. Architectural steel profiles now compete directly with wood, fiber cement, and vinyl on appearance — while outlasting all of them. Here is how the profiles differ and what a proper installation actually involves.

Why steel on walls

The case parallels the roofing argument, with one difference: walls do not shed water the way a roof does, so the demands are different. What steel brings is dimensional stability and immunity to the failure modes that take out other claddings.

  • It does not rot, warp, or feed insects. Wood siding in a humid mountain climate is in a slow argument with moisture it eventually loses. Steel is not part of that conversation.
  • It will not crack or sag in temperature swings. Vinyl becomes brittle in deep cold and can warp under intense heat or reflected sun. Steel holds its shape.
  • It is non-combustible. Meaningful where wildfire or ember exposure is a concern.
  • The finish is factory-applied. A quality coating holds color far longer than field paint, and there is no repainting cycle every several years.

The common profiles

Board and batten (vertical)

Wide flat panels separated by raised battens, echoing traditional vertical wood siding. It reads as farmhouse or modern-agrarian depending on color and proportion, and it is the profile most often chosen when the goal is a contemporary building that still feels regional. The vertical line also makes a building read taller.

Corrugated and wavy

The familiar rippled profile. Inexpensive, structurally rigid for its weight, and genuinely at home on agricultural and industrial buildings — increasingly used as a deliberate accent on modern residential work. Because the ribs are exposed, this profile is more forgiving of minor substrate irregularity than a flat panel.

Flush and reveal panel

Flat panels that meet either tightly (flush) or with a deliberate shadow gap between them (reveal). This is the most contemporary of the profiles and the least forgiving — a flat expanse of metal shows every imperfection in the wall behind it, so substrate flatness and installer care matter more here than anywhere else. When it is done well, the result is a crisp, minimal facade nothing else quite matches.

Standing seam wall panel

The same vertical seam profile used on roofs, run down a wall. Choosing it lets a building carry one continuous material and seam line from roof through wall, which is precisely the look many modern designs are after. It also means the wall inherits the roof panel's concealed-fastener construction.

Metal shake and shingle

Stamped panels that mimic wood shake or slate. A niche option, generally chosen where an appearance is required but the maintenance of the real material is not wanted.

What matters beyond the profile

Gauge

Thicker steel resists denting and stays flatter across a wide panel. Lighter gauge costs less and is more prone to showing waviness. For a wall people walk past and touch — near a driveway, a walkway, a play area — the heavier gauge is usually worth it.

Finish system

This is where long-term appearance is decided. Coating systems differ substantially in how well they resist chalking and fading under UV. In a mountain setting with high UV at elevation and strong sun reflection off snow, finish quality is not a place to economize. Ask specifically what coating system a quote includes rather than accepting "painted steel."

The wall assembly behind the panel

This is the part that gets skipped in most sales conversations and matters more than the panel itself. Metal siding is a shedding surface, not a sealed one. Wind-driven rain gets behind cladding — all cladding — so the assembly needs a properly detailed water-resistive barrier and, ideally, a drainage gap that lets incidental moisture escape and dry.

Rainscreen detailing: furring the panels out from the sheathing creates a ventilated cavity behind the cladding. Moisture that gets past the face has somewhere to go and can dry. In a humid climate with real rainfall, this is the difference between a wall assembly that lasts as long as the siding does and one that quietly fails behind a perfectly good-looking facade.

Dissimilar metals

Steel in direct contact with incompatible metals — certain fasteners, flashings, or copper components — can drive galvanic corrosion. Correct fastener selection and isolation at transitions is basic competence, but worth confirming your installer treats it that way.

Thermal movement

Metal expands and contracts. Panels need fastening that permits movement, and trim details need to accommodate it. Pinning a long panel rigidly at both ends invites oil canning or fastener stress.

The honest summary: vinyl wins on up-front cost and nothing else. Wood wins on authenticity if you accept the maintenance. Fiber cement is a strong middle option. Steel wins on longevity, fire resistance, and dimensional stability, at a higher initial price.

Pairing siding with a metal roof

When the roof and walls are both steel, a few things get easier. Trim and flashing can be fabricated from the same coil, so colors match exactly instead of approximately. Transitions between roof and wall are detailed by one crew that owns the whole envelope, rather than two trades meeting at a line and each assuming the other handled it.

You do not have to clad the whole building. A common and effective approach is metal on the elevations that take the weather — or on a single feature wall — with another material elsewhere.
